What causes the feet to have dry skin that sometimes can be painful?

There are many lotions and creams to alleviate the condition, but what can be done to prevent it?What causes the feet to have dry skin that sometimes can be painful?
It can be caused by ill-fitting shoes, by not walking properly (having an off balance gait) and by age.

It's best to get the hard skin removed - you can buy a special blade at the chemists if you don't want to go to the chiropodist. Apply softening cream every night at bedtime to help prevent it from returning.

Hard skin affects your feet's 'shock absorbing' abilities and will result in foot and leg pain if it's not dealt with. What causes the feet to have dry skin that sometimes can be painful?
definitely, putting too much strain on the foot, and not moisturizing the foot as other parts of the body. Also, walking around the house without no slippers or socks constantly
