What are the chances of getting skin cancer?

I really want to get a little bit of a tan from being outside. Is it possible to get a tan AND where sunscreen? What are the chances of getting skin cancer?
My doctor believe it or not had me go to a indoor tanning place because at 36 i have osteoarthritis and a bone disease that requires surgury...he felt the vitamin D you get from the bulbs gets into your bones faster then foods with vitamin D or suppliments....he was right my bone scan was today and it hasnt gotten worse as i was warned and i have a nice tan to boot...very safe to go to, the people are very schooled and have to go to school to learn alot about the safe way to tan and lotions and how not to burn anyone!

Best thing i ever did....btw the bulbs are metered by the cancer society montly to be sure it is up to standards and no high amounts of cancer causing rays are being used, very safe..What are the chances of getting skin cancer?
Use sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight 10am - 2pm. You will naturally get a little darker in the summer months. But ask yourself, why do you need a tan? Is it really that important?

take care of your body...

By the way, the average person has a 1 in 7 chance of getting Melanoma. Those with skin cancer risk factors, including sun burns before the age of 21. the chances increase to 1 in 5.
Please don't get it from the sun Angela. Get the artificial wipe/brush/spray ons. They have come a long way and you can't tell the difference. Cancer is not an acceptable trade-off to have a tan, and ANY exposure to the sun long enough to give you any kind of tan drastically increases your risk of cancer.
It is possible to get a tan and wear sunscreen, but the healthiest way to get a tan is to get an artificial one. Exposing yourself to the sun for a long period of time, even if you use sunscreen, still increases your risk for skin cancer.
I believe you mean ';wear'; sunscreen.

Yes it is possible, people have been doing it for years. Beats sunburn or skin cancer. Unless vanity is more important than skin cancer, I dunno...
Definitely YES! They found that each stay past the edge of the sea a year or more before the medical examination was associated with an increase of 5% of the development of moles.
