How do I stop my daughters skin from drying out?

With the recent negative wind chills, my 6 year old daughters hands have been drying out. She wears well insulated mittens when she goes outside, but I think they're drying out from washing them. Her hands are becoming dry with red patches. I've had her put hand lotion on a couple times a day, but that doesn't seem to be doing the job. Does anyone have any other suggestions or suggest a certain type of lotion? Do humidifiers really work?

She also puts lotion on after baths, would baby oil work better? How do I stop my daughters skin from drying out?
The first thing you want to do is contact her doctor and ask for a prescription for a steroid cream to get the dry skin under control. The cream will clear up the red blotchy spots and dryness and then once you have it under control you can keep it that way by using a good daily moisturizer such as Eucerin or Cetaphil which can be bought over the counter at any store in the lotion department but they are more pricey than other lotions (but worth it). Don't bath her every day, go with every other day and cooler water is better for the skin than hot water which dries it out faster. Load her with lotion with in 1 minute of getting out while her skin is still moist so the lotion will lock in the moisture.

Instead of having her wash her hands after the bathroom use or whatever, have her use Purel hand sanitizer instead. How do I stop my daughters skin from drying out?
Humidifiers will work for lungs and throat not really for dry skin. I suggest if her skin gets cracked that you give her a band aid with neosporin on the white part of the bandage. Bath and Body works lotion works really well along with body butter. Apply the body butter heavily to feet and hands before you put the gloves and socks on. You should do this for about 5 days and you should see a big difference. Also, make sure she is washing with a moisturizing soap as in (dove, olay) Olay is the one that works the best for me.
Our dermatologist recommended Cereve skin care...specifically the tub stuff...for my daughter's dry skin. It's a little more expensive than regular lotion, but it really does work. It isn't greasy and has no perfumes or dyes.

Make sure she isn't using a lot of hand sanitizer (sometimes kids use it a lot at school) because the alcohol will dry out her hands.
Baby oil right after bath time. Shea butter is for very very dry skin so that's another option... stick to baby products non scented or go to local gnc or nutrition stores for natural products...

If it doesn't get better soon, it's best to take her to the doctors so it doesn't develop into eczema. They will give you a stronger cream to put for a week or so to bring hydration back.

All the best.
Both my daughter and I have trouble with dry skin in the winter. We use baby oil after baths/showers (rub it on before drying off), and Eucerin cream after washing hands (every time!). Also, drinking enough water really helps - it's easy to get dehydrated in cold weather.
i have a skin problem,

and my hands will bleed a little if i'm in coldness for too long,

use bath and body works vanilla hand lotion.

it works amazingly well.
that same exact this happens to me all the time. have you tried shea butter? it always works for me. it's much better then the lotions and it's natural.
My sons Doc recomended Eucerin it works great especially for this kind of weather, I hope I helped.
Put old fashioned Vaseline on them every time she wears the gloves and several times a day. This should moisturize them well. Have her wash them with Cetaphil or Dove. They are the gentlest washes.
Before drying her hands hands after a bath apply Johnsons baby oil to them, then put on lotion and while Wearing mittens have her put on some vaseline every so often
Use Eucerin,or Aveeno naturals it works really good.
dont wash her hands so much increase water intake ..dehydration
There is a product called Miracle Hand Repair that is AMAZING for dry and cracking hands. I have been using it for several years, and as long as I use it according to directions my hands never dry out. It has a lot of aloe in it, which is really great for healing your skin. I have gotten it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but have also seen it at my grocery store. It's a little pricey, but after the first couple of applications it makes a huge difference and you only need to use it once a day so it lasts a really long time. And no, I don't work for the company who makes it. :)
